How to create a friendlier atmosphere at work

A work environment where employees feel welcome, respected and comfortable can help improve productivity, increase morale and reduce turnover. Staff members who are happy will often go the extra mile, not because they have to, but because they want to. But a healthy and positive corporate culture requires more than just an attractive salary. Keep the following tips in mind to help build a truly appealing and stimulating workplace:

1. Be positive

Present an attitude of positivity and approachability. Show coworkers that you are available and willing to help them. Take time to learn more about them and, most importantly, avoid office gossip.

2. Treat everyone with respect

Everyone you work with deserves respect, even when opinions differ. Exchange ideas, encourage your coworkers to share their thoughts and be open to hearing them all the way through without interrupting. Showing genuine interest in your fellow staff members and investing time in getting to know them will also help you earn the respect of others.

3. Celebrate success

ard work and great results deserve to be noticed. Whether it’s acknowledging achievements at the start of team meetings, handing out personalised rewards or grabbing dinner and drinks after work, these little moments of appreciation remind your coworkers that the office is truly a part of their lives. Celebrating individual and company successes is always a fun way to express appreciation, boost morale, maintain momentum and bring about the spirit of camaraderie.

4. Schedule fun activities

Every now and then, a change of pace is fun – and having fun makes people happy and relaxed! Whether it’s a team-building bowling night or going out for happy hour, work outings are a great way for employees to bond. If you love event planning, volunteer to put together a ‘fun committee’ that will be in charge of collecting ideas from coworkers and organising events.

5. Work together for a greater good

More and more professionals want to work for firms that do the right thing. Take on a non-profit campaign and encourage your coworkers to participate in fundraising events, a charity race or an environmental project. You will build trust and form a bond when you share common goals and engage in activities for the good of others. Then, recognise everyone for their contribution by posting regular reports and/or pictures in the office or in the company’s newsletter.
