Data architect
If you know anything about tech, then you know that data is hot. Everyone is collecting vast amounts of data, but not everybody knows what to do with it or how to analyse it. Dissecting and filtering out valuable insights from big data is becoming increasingly important.
If you have an analytical mind, find it easy to detect patterns, and have a meticulous work ethic, you might already be on your way to be the next data architect star. Creating logical patterns and blueprints, you will set up, test, and maintain huge databases. While it might just seem like a lot of numbers to some people, you will be able to use data to solve your company’s problems or create new business opportunities.
Scrum master
Although most people have never even heard of this job, a scrum master is pulling the strings behind a well-performing tech team. This not only demands a deep tech understanding but also requires you to have excellent communication and planning skills. After all, the efficient progress of the tech team depends on the scrum master.
Being responsible for how information is exchanged across and within tech teams, the scrum master will call the team into daily meetings to assess work progress and make necessary adjustments. This means that you also need to be aligned with the overall goals of the company. You need to quickly determine whether a project meets the goals, is on budget, and can be adjusted whenever the management pivots.
Tech product manager
Similarly to the scrum master, you need to have in-depth knowledge in tech as well as a business mindset in order to qualify for being a tech product manager. You probably won’t do much coding yourself, but you need to be able to read it. Tech product managers are usually former developers themselves but have moved to building a tech product – be it a mobile game or a cyber security software.
Being a tech product manager, you are the communication link between the management and the tech team. You need to effectively communicate business goals to the tech side while conveying the tech development to the heads of business. However, you are much more than a mediator – you are responsible for the success of the product.
User experience (UX) designer
Whether its desktop or a mobile app, excellent user experience is paramount to the success of your product. User experience designers are becoming increasingly important for both startups and multinationals. If you have excellent tech skills but are also visually inclined, you might have what is needed to be a user experience designer.
Being concerned with the overall feel of a tech product, your goal is to match the product’s functions and usability to consumer behaviour. This means that you are constantly revising wireframes, sitemaps and storyboards to simplify and improve processes. While a tech understanding is definitely necessary, you really need to be proficient with photoshop and illustrator in order to visualise your ideas.
