This New Year, Climb the Career Ladder With These 3 Simple Steps

3 ways to climb the career ladder

As New Year’s resolutions are as popular as ever, the thought of advancing your career surely has crossed your mind. Whether it’s getting that promotion or moving to a different department – it’s time to tackle your professional goals.

Climbing the career ladder may not seem as easy, but don’t worry, we’ve got you covered with the following tips!

1. Set your goal

Climbing the career ladder sounds great but is in itself not a goal, as there are many different ways you can move up professionally. First and foremost, take some time to think about what you want to achieve in your career climb, and be SMART about it!

Whether it be working on a larger portfolio in the same position, or taking on new responsibilities outside of your scope of work, you need to define a clear goal that you can work towards!

2. Talk to your boss

Sometimes trying to understand the direction you should take isn’t so simple. If you are unsure about where your professional life is heading towards, do not be afraid to ask your boss or manager for help! Ideally, you should also find a mentor within or outside of the company.

This approach will help you to get a more objective opinion on your career progression. It also helps you to make a decision on what path you should be embarking on. In showing your sincerity in growing and advancing your career, your company would be glad to see a dedicated and motivated employee. On the flipside, if your boss sees you as a threat, you’ll know you’re in the wrong job – leading on to our next point!

3. Switch jobs

If your company or boss is not able to provide you with support to achieve your goals, you will soon realise that your professional life and chosen career path do not fit into this company. What you may need is a change of scenery and a fresh start.

No matter the reason, finding a new job is the perfect opportunity to propel you up the career ladder. Instead of just hunting for a larger salary, be sure to take other factors into consideration, such as your future potential boss, your scope of work or challenges in your new role. As you don’t want to end up in the same situation as before, it’s important to keep these factors in mind.
